Baby Swim Trainer Guide: Choose Your SWIMTRAINER Stage
Choosing a baby swim trainer starts with your child's age, weight, fit and swimming ability. SWIMTRAINER has three children's stages: Red for 13-40 lbs, Orange for 33-66 lbs and Yellow for 45-80 lbs. Red offers the most buoyancy; Yellow offers the least and is intended for advanced young swimmers. Each model offers a different level of buoyancy to support your child's stage of swimming.
This guide helps you compare the stages, understand the overlapping weight ranges and decide when to ask for sizing advice. SWIMTRAINER is a swim learning aid, not a life jacket. It does not protect against drowning and must only be used under constant adult supervision.

SWIMTRAINER age and weight chart
Use all four factors together: the stated age range, weight range, correct fit and current swimming ability. Not sure which stage to choose? Contact our team before you buy, and we'll be happy to help.
| Model | Age range | Weight range | Buoyancy | Swimming stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SWIMTRAINER Red | 3 months-4 years | 13-40 lbs | Highest of the three | Babies and beginners starting supervised water practice |
| SWIMTRAINER Orange | 2-6 years | 33-66 lbs | Medium | Beginners and advancing swimmers who meet the age, weight and fit guidance |
| SWIMTRAINER Yellow | 4-8 years | 45-80 lbs | Lowest of the three | Advanced young swimmers already practicing coordinated arm and leg movements |
Check the product instructions before use. A child must be within the model's stated weight range, and the aid must fit correctly. Yellow is designed for advanced young swimmers, so swimming ability matters alongside age, weight and fit.
What is a baby swim trainer?
A baby swim trainer is a swimming aid used during supervised water practice. The SWIMTRAINER supports a natural horizontal swimming position, allowing children to practice arm and leg movements under close adult supervision. Its inflatable chambers provide support while the child's arms and legs remain free to move.
FREDS SWIM ACADEMY's roots are in a swim school founded in 1986. Three-time open-water world champion and Olympian Leonie Beck has shared that she learned to swim at FREDS SWIM ACADEMY with the SWIMTRAINER Classic as a child.
Which swim trainer should I choose for my baby or toddler?
Red: the starting stage for babies and beginners
Red is intended for children from 3 months to 4 years who weigh 13-40 lbs. It provides the highest buoyancy of the three children's models and is the starting option for babies and young beginners within those limits.
For your baby's first SWIMTRAINER, check the recommended age and weight range as well as the fit. If you'd like help choosing before you buy, get in touch with our team.
Orange: medium support for growing children
Orange is intended for ages 2-6 years and 33-66 lbs, including beginners and advancing swimmers. It offers less buoyancy than Red. Choosing Orange depends on the child's fit and swimming ability as well as the stated age and weight ranges; it does not require every child to have used Red first.

Yellow: lower support for advanced young swimmers
Yellow is intended for ages 4-8 years and 45-80 lbs. It has the lowest buoyancy of the three children's stages and is for advanced young swimmers already coordinating arm and leg movements.
Yellow is designed for children who are already practicing coordinated arm and leg movements and are ready for less buoyancy. If you're unsure whether it's the right stage for your child, we're happy to help you choose.
Choosing between Red and Orange, or Orange and Yellow
The weight ranges overlap intentionally, so there can be more than one model to consider:
- 33-40 lbs: Red and Orange overlap in weight. Check the age guidance, fit and level of support appropriate for your child.
- 45-66 lbs: Orange and Yellow overlap in weight. Yellow is only an option when the child also meets its age, fit and advanced swimming-ability guidance.
If you are unsure, ask us for sizing help before buying. Tell us your child's age, current weight and swimming experience so we can help you check the product guidance.
When should my child move to the next stage?
A stage change is appropriate only when the next model meets your child's age, weight, fit and swimming-ability requirements.
Each stage combines a recommended weight range with a different level of buoyancy. Always stay within the stated weight limits. If your child is above the current model's limit but still needs more support than the next stage provides, pause use and contact us for help choosing a suitable option.
The children's progression is through the Red, Orange and Yellow models. Follow the inflation instructions for the selected model; do not reduce inflation as a substitute for changing stages.
How does SWIMTRAINER compare with other swim aids?
Arm bands provide buoyancy at the upper arms, while seated floats support a sitting position. SWIMTRAINER is shaped to support a natural horizontal swimming position with free arm and leg movement. Individual products differ in their fit, support and intended use.
For a broader overview, read our baby swim float guide. For specific comparisons, see SWIMTRAINER vs. Arm Floaties and SWIMTRAINER vs. Puddle Jumper. Always check the particular product's labeling: a swim learning aid and an approved life jacket serve different purposes.
Supervised practice and water safety
SWIMTRAINER is not a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket or a rescue device. Stay within arm's reach, remain attentive and follow the product instructions throughout use. Swimming aids do not replace attentive adult supervision or other water-safety measures.
The CPSC's June 2026 report recorded an average of 376 fatal pool- or spa-related drownings annually among children under 15 during 2021-2023. Almost four in five victims were younger than five. Its prevention advice includes attentive supervision, barriers to unsupervised water access and learning to swim.
Keep practice short and relaxed, and stop when your child is tired or uncomfortable. Our free online swim lessons provide parent-led guidance for practicing together.
A separate option for teens and adults: SWIMTRAINER PRO
SWIMTRAINER PRO is intended for ages 12 and up and 132-199 lbs. It has six inflatable chambers and is designed for swim technique practice, aqua fitness and gentle water exercise. It is a separate product, not a fourth stage after Yellow. For prenatal or therapeutic use, follow professional guidance.
Frequently asked questions
What age can a baby start using SWIMTRAINER Red?
SWIMTRAINER Red is intended for ages 3 months-4 years and 13-40 lbs, with a correct fit. If you'd like help choosing for your baby, contact our team before buying. Follow the product instructions and keep an attentive adult within arm's reach throughout use.
Which swim trainer is suitable for a 2-year-old?
Red or Orange may be an option for a 2-year-old, depending on weight, fit and swimming ability. Red covers 13-40 lbs; Orange covers 33-66 lbs. In the overlapping weight range, choose according to fit and the child's support needs. Yellow is intended for older, advanced young swimmers.
Does my child need to use all three stages?
Not necessarily. Choose a starting model that meets your child's age, weight, fit and swimming-ability requirements. The colors describe different levels of support; they are not a requirement to buy every model.
What if my child is above Orange's weight range but still needs more support?
Please contact our team so we can help you review the options. Orange should only be used within its stated weight range and with a correct fit. Yellow is designed for advanced young swimmers, so it is important to consider swimming ability as well as weight before choosing it.
Is SWIMTRAINER a life jacket?
No. SWIMTRAINER is a swim learning aid, not a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket. It does not protect against drowning and must only be used under constant adult supervision.
